Joel, Manuel
(1826-90)
   German rabbi and scholar. He was born in Birnbaum, Poznania. In 1854 he joined the faculty of the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary, and ten years later became rabbi of the Breslau community. In the rabbinical assemblies of Kassel and Leipzig, he advocated moderation in Reform practice. He published studies of Ibn Gabirol, Maimonides, Hasdai Crescas and Levi ben Gershom; he also wrote a two-volume work on comparative religion.
